FESTOMANE works to change perceptions of manufacturing and engineering in order to build a stronger economy and community in and around Gloucestershire. A registered charity, Festomane promotes the education of the public and young people in science and technology, inspiring them to take up fulfilling careers. It fosters awareness of and pride in local manufacturing and engineering capabilities, whilst helping businesses to access the support they need to grow.
Manufacturing and engineering are critical to the success of the UK economy, contributing 27% of GDP (2014) and employing almost a fifth of the workforce. The sector is growing and further strong growth is forecast, but to realise this potential we need many more skilled people. Just to keep pace, the UK needs to recruit 182,000 people with engineering skills each year and increase the current engineering workforce by almost 50%!
The local economy is heavily dependent on their success for its prosperity. Yet these employers struggle to recruit skilled staff and likewise, many local people have little or no awareness of the immense range of career opportunities open to them. Festomane was established with the express purpose of addressing these issues.
