This FREE EVENT was, in 2018, held on 8th March from 4pm to 7pm at
The Growth Hub, University of Gloucestershire, Gloucester. We aim to hold the 2019 event later in the year when, hopefully, the terms of our EU exit have been made clear and prospective exhibitors are more certain of their arrangements.
At the 2018 event, help was offered to find career paths into Engineering, Manufacturing or Cyber; to decide which was the best choice, University or Apprenticeship and to find out about student finance & funding! There were also apprenticeship opportunities on offer from a number of Gloucestershire companies.
Our Apprenticeships & Careers Show brings young people and the public face-to-face with local engineering, manufacturing and cyber companies to talk about careers and work opportunities. Aimed at students aged 14+, the 2018 show also celebrated the Year of Engineering, helping to dispel some of the myths about a career in engineering and removing some of the perceived barriers.
UK manufacturing and engineering are growing (turnover is up 9% since 2008) and the growth is forecast to continue (see ‘The state of engineering key facts 2018’ from Engineering UK, below). To support this, we’re going to need to recruit 182,000 people with engineering skills every year until 2022, including
- 107,000 at level 4+ (degree or equivalent) that’s 30% more than currently
- 56,000 per year at level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeships) more than double the current intake
- Overall, we need 50% more engineers than we currently have
So there are great job prospects for people with manufacturing and engineering skills and the Apprenticeship and Careers Show covers everything from subject choices at school, further education choices, work experience and apprenticeships, plus the grants and financial help available.
We had over 30 exhibitors and workshops on Managing Student Finances, Employability Skills and ‘University or Apprenticeship – Smashing the Misconceptions’.
